On the River: Experiencing the Brazilian Amazon

Amazonia Expeditions in Manaus, Brazil

Piranhas, sloths, and tree snakes, oh my.  This spring break, I had the amazing opportunity to travel up and down the Brazilian Amazon. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. The greens were so vibrant, and the stars were maybe one of the most beautiful things I have seen.

This experience consisted of a class, two days a week. We discussed environmental sustainability and some of the things we would experience on our adventures. The trip was 10 days total, we sailed on the white water and black water of the Amazon, even seeing the marriage of the waters where they meet. We got to experience the culture of tribe members and visited a village, where we got beat in soccer game really bad. One of my favorite days on the trip we got to give bananas to wild spider monkeys and go swimming with pink dolphins!

This experience was life changing, emotionally and culturally. I found myself wanting to explore nature more and actual appreciate what was around me. Seeing all the animals reminded me that I can directly impact what happens in the world. I need to strive to do that more. It is easy to follow out of sight, out of mind. I want to make a difference in the environment around me.
