My Global Technical Workforce experience in Ghana gave me the opportunity to explore the country while learning how engineering, sustainability, and culture intersect in everyday life. During the 10-day program, I traveled to Accra, Cape Coast, and Kumasi, visiting the University of Ghana and the University of Cape Coast to learn about engineering education and global collaboration. We also experienced local businesses and communities, including Sika and a floating village.

The floating village was my favorite part of the trip. Watching children joyfully swim through the water reminded me of the water village from Avatar, except it was real. The simplicity of life and the strong sense of community left a lasting impression on me. It made me appreciate how people can build meaningful, fulfilling lives using the resources available to them.

This experience reshaped my definition of a Global Citizen Scholar. I now believe it means learning from people whose experiences differ from my own and recognizing that sustainability extends beyond the physical environment. It also includes how communities support one another, adapt to challenges, and build lasting relationships. Ghana taught me to be more grateful, open-minded, and intentional about using my education to learn from and contribute to communities around the world.
